Meta Unveils Orion Glasses, Quest 3S, and Groundbreaking AI Updates
At Connect 2024, Meta made several big announcements that signal its push into both hardware and AI. The standout reveal was the Quest 3S, a more budget-friendly version of the Quest 3 VR headset, while the underperforming Quest Pro was officially discontinued. Meta also showcased its groundbreaking Orion AR glasses, which Mark Zuckerberg claims are the most advanced in the world, alongside an upgraded version of its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, now available in a limited-edition clear frame. On the AI front, Meta is rapidly expanding its features, introducing celebrity chatbot voices to Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, AI-generated images for feeds, and live translation through the Ray-Ban glasses. Additionally, the company launched Llama 3.2, an open-source AI model, and announced exciting updates for Horizon Worlds, including new avatars and a YouTube co-watching feature.
OpenAI Faces Leadership Shake-Up as CEO and Two Others Depart
OpenAIās CTO, Mira Murati, is stepping down after six-and-a-half years at the company. She explained that sheās leaving to focus on personal exploration and to help ensure a smooth leadership transition. Two other executives, Bob McGrew (Chief Research Officer) and Barret Zoph (VP of Post Training), are also departing. According to CEO Sam Altman, these decisions were made separately but happened around the same time to support a company reorganization. Murati reflected on her time at OpenAI, highlighting her work on AI safety and accessibility. Altman acknowledged that while the timing might seem sudden, it aligns with the companyās current growth and goals. The leadership changes come right before OpenAIās Dev Day conference, a key event as the company continues to expand.
OpenAI Teams Up with iPhone Designers for Its Hardware Ambitions
Former Apple design chief Jony Ive has confirmed he is collaborating with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on a groundbreaking AI-powered hardware device, marking Iveās return to tech innovation since leaving Apple. The project aims to create a device that fosters a computing experience "less socially disruptive than the iPhone." With secured private funding and plans to raise up to $1 billion, Iveās design firm, LoveFrom, spearheads the design alongside former Apple executives. Though details are confidential, the device will utilize generative AI to tackle complex user tasks beyond traditional software limitations. The collaboration between two tech giants could result in AI hardware that is genuinely transformative in daily life. Combining Ive's visionary design with OpenAIās advanced models could set it apart from current offerings.
OpenAI rolls out Advance Voice Mode for paid users
OpenAI is rolling out its enhanced Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) to all ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers this week, featuring improved functionality and more natural, personalized interactions. After a limited release in July, AVM now includes Custom Instructions and Memory, enhancing personalized conversations with recall capabilities. The update also boosts AVMās ability to understand accents and introduces five new nature-inspired voices, replacing the āSkyā voice. However, AVM will not be available in several regions like the EU and the UK. With OpenAI focusing on AI agents and superintelligence, AVM is a step toward making everyday AI interactions feel more human.
