Apple’s New ‘App Intent APIs’ Brings Siri Closer to True Context-Aware AI
Apple has started rolling out new developer tools for Siri’s upcoming screen awareness capabilities within Apple Intelligence. These tools, known as ‘App Intent APIs,’ allow developers to enable Siri and Apple Intelligence to interact directly with on-screen content across apps, browsers, documents, photos, and more, without the need for screenshot workarounds. Initial testing of ChatGPT integration is now available in the iOS 18.2 beta, though the full suite of screen awareness features is expected in a later update. This update positions Apple to compete with other AI features recently introduced by competitors, such as Claude’s computer use function and Microsoft’s Copilot Vision. While Apple Intelligence has seen mixed responses so far, evolving Siri beyond voice commands into a fully context-aware assistant is an anticipated improvement. After several modest releases, Apple may need to prove its capabilities in practice so that users can fully embrace it as a leader in AI.
Nvidia Takes the Lead as the World’s Most Valuable Company
Nvidia has officially become the world’s largest company by market capitalization, overtaking Apple on Tuesday, thanks to a massive surge in AI-driven demand. Valued at $3.43 trillion by the close of trading, Nvidia edged out Apple’s $3.38 trillion valuation. This accomplishment marks Nvidia’s second time briefly outpacing Apple this year, following a single-day lead in June. Since late 2022, the chipmaker’s stock has soared by an extraordinary 850%, largely fueled by its role in powering the world’s most advanced large language models. While Apple has made recent inroads into AI with its own Apple Intelligence system, Nvidia’s AI chips remain at the heart of global AI infrastructure. Meanwhile, OpenAI has reportedly started collaborating with Broadcom to build its own proprietary hardware systems, potentially signaling new shifts in the AI hardware landscape.
OpenAI Acquires Chat.com to Dominate AI Conversations
OpenAI has officially acquired Chat.com, adding it to its portfolio of valuable domain names. As of today, the domain redirects directly to ChatGPT, the company’s AI-powered chatbot, with OpenAI confirming the acquisition via email. Originally registered in September 1996, Chat.com has long held a high profile. Last year, Dharmesh Shah, HubSpot's co-founder and CTO, purchased the domain for $15.5 million, ranking it among the highest publicly reported domain sales. Shah revealed he sold the domain to an undisclosed buyer, which he confirmed today on X (formerly Twitter) to be OpenAI, hinting he received OpenAI shares in exchange. Despite the acquisition, Chat.com is not being used as ChatGPT’s main hosting domain, suggesting OpenAI isn’t looking to rebrand under this name. While OpenAI hasn’t disclosed the sale price, the move highlights its ongoing strategy to secure high-value assets in the AI domain space.
