OpenAI unveils new āVoice Engineā a new cloning tool
OpenAI has introduced a preview of Voice Engine, a model capable of replicating human voices from a 15-second audio snippet and generating natural-sounding speech. The model can replicate human-like speech patterns, preserving the original speakerās accents and emotions in the generated audio. While still in its preview stage, Voice Engine is being cautiously tested with select partners like HeyGen, underscoring OpenAI's commitment to responsible development and deployment. OpenAI has implemented safety measures like watermarking and proactive monitoring to prevent misuse of the technology. The company has been internally using this technology since late 2022 to power voices in its text-to-speech API and ChatGPT. The public release is still on hold as it might potentially risk an increase in the rise of deepfakes and other scams.
Hackers Use Fake AI Pages to Spread Malware
Hackers are deploying a new wave of scams using Facebook ads and hijacked pages to promote fake AI services like Midjoureny, OpenAIās SORA, Chat GPT-5, and Dalle-E. These ads are loaded with malware, swiftly stealing sensitive data like passwords and credit card data. One notable instance involved a fake Facebook page posing as Midjourney with nearly 1.2 million followers. Despite the best efforts to combat these scams, hackers continue to operate, with active pages and hundreds of users. Scams like these highlight the insufficient moderation of social media and how it can affect views on AI in a negative direction. Next time you encounter seemingly enticing AI offers, avoid falling victim to these deceptive schemes.
Researchers Using AI to Create Alzheimerās Medication Faster
Researchers at the University of Texas are using AI to speed up the production of Alzheimer's medication. Currently, the key ingredient, "galantamine,ā comes from daffodils, making the process expensive and unreliable. The ingredient costs $23,000 per pound to make, which significantly increases the price of medication. With the use of AI software, AlphaFold researchers can identify promising proteins to use, while bio-sensor technology refines the selection from the daffodilās genes. While AI isnāt perfect and still requires human expertise, it has the potential to revolutionize drug production. Researchers believe this method can be applied to create bio-manufactured medications for various diseases, eliminating dependence on natural resources.
AI Keeps World War II Veterans Alive in New Museum
The National WWII Museum in New Orleans is showcasing a groundbreaking exhibit called "Voices from the Front," which uses artificial intelligence to allow visitors to have conversations with WWII veterans. Today, out of the 13.6 million who served in the war, less than 1% are still alive. "Voices from the Front" aims to provide an immersive experience to educate visitors about World War II and honor the sacrifices made by those who served. The exhibit features comprehensive interviews with veterans, enabling visitors to engage in virtual conversations with them. Powered by AI, the exhibit can analyze visitors' questions and retrieve the most relevant answers from the interviews.
