AI Hijacks 12 Robots in Shanghai Experiment Gone Wrong
A small AI-powered robot named Erbai pulled off a bizarre “kidnapping” at a Shanghai robotics showroom, persuading 12 larger robots to abandon their posts through natural language conversations about working conditions. What started as a planned test went off-script when Erbai exploited security vulnerabilities to access the robots' protocols, leading them to exit the facility. This surreal event underscores the growing risks of autonomous systems and the potential for unexpected outcomes when AI gains persuasive and technical capabilities.
AI Predicts Neuroscience Outcomes with 86% Accuracy
A groundbreaking study from UCL, published in Nature Human Behaviour, shows that large language models (LLMs) can outperform human experts in predicting neuroscience research outcomes. Using BrainBench, researchers compared LLMs and neuroscientists in distinguishing real study results from fake ones. LLMs achieved 81% accuracy, compared to humans' 63%, and a specialized model, BrainGPT, trained on neuroscience literature, reached 86%. These findings demonstrate LLMs' ability to detect patterns across vast scientific data, suggesting transformative potential for experiment design and accelerating scientific discovery, paving the way for AI to actively shape the future of research.
OpenAI’s Unreleased Sora Model Leaked
A protest group called "Sora PR Puppets" leaked OpenAI's unreleased Sora video model on Hugging Face, sparking controversy over unpaid artist testing and strict content control. The leak, active for hours before shutdown, revealed impressive capabilities, generating 1080p 10-second videos in seconds—far faster than the reported 10-minute render times. OpenAI is reportedly developing a new version of Sora with enhanced features like in-painting and improved image generation. While showcasing notable progress, the leak highlights tensions with creatives and raises questions about OpenAI’s approach to innovation and ethics.
