Ex-Google Engineer Charged with Stealing AI Secrets for China
Linwei Ding, a former Google engineer, faces charges for stealing confidential AI-related information from the company. He allegedly downloaded hundreds of files with trade secrets and planned to work for Chinese AI companies, raising concerns about economic and national security. The US authorities highlight the threat of Chinese economic espionage and its impact on American innovation. Google detected suspicious activity after Ding’s resignation, uncovering unauthorized file uploads and evidence of potential remote work from China.
OpenAI Releases Emails Countering Musk's Lawsuit
OpenAI has responded to Elon Musk's lawsuit with a blog post containing Musk's own emails, refuting claims that the company strayed from its original mission. The emails reveal Musk's push for OpenAI to raise substantial funds and his suggestion that Tesla should acquire the company. Ilya Sutskever, absent since November, is listed as an author, clarifying that "Open" refers to benefiting everyone from AI, not sharing its science. Musk tweeted that he'd drop the lawsuit if OpenAI changed its name to 'ClosedAI'.
South Korea Trials AI Dolls for Elderly Care
South Korea's government is introducing 7,000 AI robot dolls for seniors and dementia patients. The $1,800 robot doll by Hyodal can engage in full conversations, combat loneliness, and provide medication reminders. Despite privacy concerns, studies with over 9,000 users have shown reduced depression levels from 5.73 to 3.14 and improved medicine intake from 2.69 to 2.87. The doll features safety alerts, voice reminders, and a range of activities like music and quizzes. Caregivers can directly monitor using the companion app and communicate with them regularly. This initiative addresses South Korea's aging population and low birth rates, positioning it as an early adopter of elder care technology.
Musk Pushes Open-Source Agenda as xAI Opens Up Grok Chatbot
Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is set to open-source its chatbot, Gork, this week. This comes shortly after Musk sued OpenAI, accusing the company of deviating from its original commitment to open-source technology. Gork, which is a competitor of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, offers features like real-time information access and viewpoints free from “political correctness." However, it is currently exclusive to paying subscribers to Musk’s social media platform. By open-sourcing Grok, xAI joins the ranks of companies like Meta and Mistral advocating for transparent AI development—a stance consistent with Musk's support for open-source principles evident in his ventures like Tesla and X.
